“Higo Tsuba” is a “Tsuba”(a sword guard) produced mainly in Kumamoto City and Yatsushiro City of Kumamoto Prefecture, produced after the Edo Period.
“Higo” is the name of the present Kumamoto Prefecture having being called in the period of Edo when samurai existed.
“Tsuba” was originally used to protect a hand but samurai cultivated their artistic taste with time.
It was produced by Sen no Rikyu who perfected the art of tea ceremony and his pupil, Hosokawa Sansai and another artists of 4 “Ryuha”.
*Ryuha: Schools, Disciplines, Styles of martial arts and the way of tea, and flower, etc.

The design and preeminent skills lead to the spirits of “Wabicha” which avoids brightness and gaudiness but pursues the beauty in poverty and simplicity.
*Wabicha: a style of Japanese tea ceremony, in a restricted sense of a word.

“Higo Tsuba” is the masterpiece of all ages highly estimated for its supreme beauty or ornamental value.
Some of the Japanese art works represent the exact opposite, such as “life and death” or “light and shadow”, for example, by drawing in a same picture, a white flower in full bloom and a white-haired old man whose days are numbered.

In an old and austerely-furnished tea-ceremony room, you’ll see only one beautiful flower decorated in a vase. Through its very simple decoration, we feel the sense of “life and death” and we can appreciate the true nature of things.
“Higo Tsuba” expressed the element of“ Wabi and Sabi” that is unlikely seen in Japanese swords. Samurai didn’t have swords and tsuba only to kill enemies. They loved the beauty of nature and wished for peace. And knowing that made us appreciate “Higo Tsuba” much more.
“Higo Kinko” has 4 “Ryuha” (schools).

Hikozo Hirata, who came from Kyoto, followed with Sansai Hosokawa who had excellent taste in art. Jinbei Shimizu, and Kanjiro Nishigaki
These three people lived in Yatsushiro City where Sansai Hosokawa lived in his late life, and produced “Higo Tsuba” there.

Matahichi Hayashi followed Kiyomasa Kato who was the feudal lord before Hosokawa Family moved to Kumamoto City.
Matahichi lived in Kumamoto and produced “Higo Tsuba” there. Musashi Miyamotol, the great and unrivaled swordsman, also produced “Higo Tsuba”.
Hikozo Hirata is the leading person of “Higo Tsuba”.
He worked under Sansai Hosokawa in Kyoto and moved from Tanto and Kokura to Yatsushiro. He was a samurai but later engaged in appraising gold and silver, then producing “Higo Tsuba”. He had a unique design with traditional Kyoto style and had a significant influence on following craftsman.
Jinbei Shimizu is a nephew of Hikozo Hirata and learned to produce “Higo Tsuba”with Hikozo. He created his designs in a very unique way with a cow, hen, dragon, etc.
His works are generally called, “Jingo”.
The second and the third craftsman produced the works but no craftsman remains at present. However, there are many collectors around the world.
Kanshiro Nishigaki worked under Hikozo Hirata and produced “Higo Tsuba” in Yatsushiro City. The first and the second craftsman especially used gold and copper skillfully and designed delicate pictures and patterns with many colors in a Tsuba only as much as 8 cm. The fine and careful handworks have high artistic quality and still attract many fans around the world.
Many people associate “Higo Tsuba” with Matahichi Hayashi. He had such a big influence on the world of “Higo Tsuba”. He worked under a Shogun, Kiyomasa Kato and produced firearms, later became Tsuba craftsman. His delicate skills of inlaying gold in “tuba” made of iron with beautiful designs and patterns were highly evaluated.
Some people say he is from Kasuga School, as he lived in the area of Kasuga, Kumamoto City. He is one of the great craftsmen to represent “Higo Tsuba”.
Musashi Miyamoto is a great, legendary and unbeaten swordsman in over 60 battles in his life. In his late years, he served a feudal lord, Hosokawa Family and lived in Kumamoto City. He was a master of a sword and also was an expert of Japanese calligraphy and drawings, and also produced “Higo Tsuba”. “Higo Tsuba” produced by him is national treasure of Japan as precious as the worldwide best seller book, “Gorin no Sho”.
